Nano strategy for Australia?
In February 2006, the then Federal Industry Minister, Ian MacFarlane, announced the development of a national nanotechnology strategy for Australia. In a paltry attempt to involve the public in decision making, there was only one month to make submissions.
A public consultation process was announced in early April with a closing date for submissions of 1st May. The fact that only one month was provided for submissions means that the development of a national nanotechnology strategy will proceed with less public consultation than an average development application for a new building.
The discussion paper intended to assist the public with making a submission failed to canvass many of the important issues surrounding nanotechnology. You can read FoE's submission to the Taskforce here.
Now, with a new government, comes a new opportunity to get Australia's nanotechnology policy right - and to involve the public in its development.
