As you are aware, nanotechnology is a powerful new technology for taking apart and reconstructing nature at the atomic and molecular level.
Nanotechnology raises serious social and ethical questions, as well as introducing significant new risks to human health and the environment.
I am particularly concerned that high risk, unlabelled nanofoods may now be on sale in Australia, with no requirement for new safety testing.
I am writing to request that you stop sales of unsafe, untested nanofoods until:
- nanofoods are regulated to ensure that all nano ingredients pass rigorous new safety testing before being allowed in food
- all nano ingredients are labelled to enable people to make an informed choice about whether or not they want to eat them
- the public is involved in decision making about nanotechnology and food, include being given the right to say no to nanofood
Please advise me what action you will take to stop sales of unsafe, untested, unlabelled nanofoods. I look forward to your earliest reply.
